9 Design Events to Add to Your Calendar This Fall: From TEFAF to Design Miami/Basel

Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas

An elegant brick-clad residence in Sunnybrook Estates, a neighborhood within Dallas’s architecturally stunning Old Preston Hollow enclave, is the site of the next Kips Bay Decorator Show House Dallas. The 26 designers collaborating on the revitalization of the abode include Alexa Hampton, Caroline Gidiere, Corey Damen Jenkins, and Ken Fulk. Those who can’t make it to the Lone Star State for a tour can partake in a virtual one bolstered by comments from the design team. As always, proceeds go to the Kips Bay Boys & Girls Club after-school and enrichment programs, and will also benefit local charities Dwell with Dignity and the Crystal Charity Ball. September 24–October 24, 5138 Deloache Avenue, Dallas, kipsbaydecoratorshowhouse.org

Athens Design Forum

During the pandemic, curator, researcher, and writer Katerina Papanikolopoulos moved from Los Angeles to Athens, where she soon began hatching plans for the Athens Design Forum, a nonprofit platform that examines the Greek capital’s design heritage and future. As part of it, there will be exhibitions, like one devoted to works by research and design studio Objects of Common Interest at Carwan Gallery. Guests will also be able to take intimate tours of designer Kostas Lambridis’s studio and the Kypseli home of architect Dionisis Sotovikis. Not to be missed? The public unveiling of the Papagos house, the estate where renowned painter Alekos Fassianos lives and works. September 30–October 7, various locations in Athens, athensdesignforum.com

Archtober

In New York City, October doubles as Archtober, an annual month-long festival of architecture-driven programming and exhibitions organized by AIA’s New York chapter. Cairo Modern, a glimpse into the optimistic architecture that defined the Egyptian metropolis from the 1920s through the 1970s, is a highlight, as are planned deep dives into the iconic Times Square TKTS Booth and Gilded Age Fifth Avenue mansions of yore. Tours to the likes of the “T” Space Gallery on the Steven Myron Holl Foundation’s woodland arts campus in Rhinebeck and Flushing Meadows-Park to take in the remains of the 1939/40 and 1964/65 World’s Fairs are also on the agenda. October 1–31, various locations in New York City, archtober.org

Atlanta Design Festival

Combining in-person and virtual events, MA! Design is Human’s Atlanta Design Festival is small yet insightful. Settle in for a talk with archivist and preservationist George Smart, founder and executive director of USModernist and NCModernist, cycle past uplifting new placemaking projects with the Atlanta departments of city planning and transportation, and visit the town of Young Harris, some two hours away, for a wander through the Nest at Brannon Ridge Reserve, a community of luxe, all-solar cabins. October 2–10, various locations in and around Atlanta, atlantadesignfestival.net
